Over the years, I’ve managed to learn and create a healthy haircare regimen through trial and error, ultimately growing my hair to tailbone length. Honestly, I’ve lost count when it comes to the number of products or methods I experimented with to find something that works. Can you imagine adding three more girls with completely different textures from mine to the picture? Let’s just say that this new hair journey of ours has been an adventure on its own! From our unique curl patterns to variations of thickness and length, washdays and weekly maintenance have become so important in our household. As a mother of multiples, one of my main goals is to educate my children early about proper hair care as well as create a time-efficient routine that I can maintain for us all. Recently, I noticed that detangling was taking longer than usual as well as increased shedding and dryness. The more I looked at our ends, the more I could see them severely split. My solution was to make an appointment and get a professional haircut for us all.
The Dilemma, How Young is too Young?
Gianni and Giselle are almost 4 years old with tight curl patterns and intense shrinkage. When their hair is in its naturally curly state, it’s difficult to see any split ends or damaging of their hair shafts. The following photos show their hair freshly washed with no product applied. Their beautiful curly afros look healthy and full of life but trust me, looks can be deceiving. The damaged strands are hidden underneath. Surprisingly, it wasn’t noticeable until we had their hair blow-dried straight. The only way to eliminate dead hair and avoid further damage is to cut it. Some may think the girls are a bit young, but healthy hair requires maintenance and proper care regardless of age. It’s unfortunate that we live in a world where we feel like we have to justify the choices we make for ourselves and our children. I pride myself to do what’s best for their overall health regardless of the opinions of others. As long as you’re comfortable, continue to make the best decision you can and that’s all that matters.
The Process and Results
After washing and conditioning their hair, the stylist used a heat protectant and began the process of blow drying their hair on low heat to avoid further damage. The girls actually did well throughout the entire process. Their iPads kept them occupied which allowed the stylist to work her magic. The before photos below show the excessive split ends throughout their mane. Shedding increased and detangling became a nightmare, I knew it was time for a good trim but honestly had no idea it was as bad as it was. The after photos show a complete transformation from brittle to rejuvenated! Seeing the difference definitely confirmed that I made the right decision in getting their first haircuts at their age.
Mommy Needs Her Hair Cut Too
I wanted to share some information in regards to my hair as well. I am in the process of growing out damage I experienced from post-partum shedding. Although my hair grew thicker and longer with my recent pregnancy, I experienced intense shedding around my temples and outer perimeter around 5-6 months post-partum. I normally trim my ends a few times a year for maintenance, which in turn helps my hair grow longer without breakage. As you can see in the photos below, my tailbone length had approximately 4-5 inches of split ends. It will take a few more trims to get my hair back to its normal state but I must say that it’s much healthier now then before.
Your Hair Will Tell You What It Needs
The more you pay attention to your tresses, the more you will recognize that you have all the information you need to achieve healthy hair. If you’re experiencing shedding or intense detangling issues, more than likely you have split ends or damaged hair that require cutting. If you may experience dry or brittle hair, you may need to add moisture or maybe you’re over moisturizing your hair with excessive products. At the end of the day, ask yourself what issues you are experiencing and do what is best to obtain a solution. I can honestly say that I am so glad I took the twins with me to get their first haircut. Healthy hair choices is important necessary actions help with achieving your goals. How often do you trim your hair? Do you have young children who are experiencing the same issues? What age did you start getting your children’s natural haircut? I would love to know what you guys think and how you approached the issue!
What a very educational post! You and your girls look amazing and this certainly looked like a great decision. Seeing the before and after photos …I was like whoa! Thanks for sharing!.

Thank you so much! I absolutely loved the results!
My daughter has the same issue. Her hair is very thick and curly with split ends. I thought 4 was too young to get her hair cut, but you changed my mind. We’ll get it cut very shortly. Very informative blog!
Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for your message! And glad you liked it! I only plan on trimming/cutting when needed! Let me know how it works out with your little one!
The results are amazing for all three of you! I don’t clip my ends nearly as often as I should because I maintain my own hair & get lazy lol! I know different products work differently for all curl patterns, but I’m curious which heat protectant was used. Thanks if you’re able to respond…?

Thank you! I actually have made more of an effort to get mine trimmed as well! Lol I used to be horrible with it before. I love how my curls pop after a fresh cut. And it was by Ion, I’ve seen Sally Beauty supply sell it before. Hope that helps!
Beautiful hair. Thank you for sharing

Thank you so much!
Their hair looks good and a trim was clearly needed for both girls. Will you be revising your styling techniques/products that you use? I ask this because while I would expect to see a lot of dead ends they also seem to have severe breakage issues as well. Perhaps a regime more inline with each girls texture/porosity would yield better results and reduce the need to trim so often/so much. Especially for the little one with 4a/4b hair.

Thank you so much! Their split ends and breakage was actually caused from both pulling their hair while sleeping. I used to place gloves when they were babies but somehow they would still manage to pull on it. Unfortunately it turned into a bad habit when they were toddlers as well. I will revise their regimen alittle, not much. I’m definitely excited to see their growth and health after this cut.
